Desert Tortoise is listed as “threatened” under the United States federal Endangered Species Act and is considered “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is because of widespread habitat destruction and degradation, illegal collection, disease, raven predation, and other factors. Wild desert tortoises can live about 35 or 40 years although some live to be much older.
